Former Minister of Health: We Aim to Provide Medicine to All Egyptians With the Highest Quality and Lowest Cost

Dr. Adel Adawy, former Minister of Health and Population, and Chairman of the Fourth Al-Ahram Pharmaceutical Conference currently held in Cairo, said: We are meeting today to discuss the most important challenges facing the pharmaceutical industry in Egypt, and how to confront them to ensure their localization for the benefit of the Egyptian citizen.
He added that the pharmaceutical industry in Egypt is one of the pillars of health security and the cornerstone of preserving the health of citizens, but we are all aware that there are many challenges facing this vital sector, starting from the necessary legislation, through the high costs of production, all the way to improving the quality of products and expanding the export scope.
Over the previous editions of the Al-Ahram Conference, we came up with important recommendations that helped lay the foundations for the advancement of this industry, including:
- Formulate a comprehensive plan to secure the Egyptian citizen’s need for medicines to treat current and expected diseases.
- Adapting legislation to facilitate the entry of international and local companies into the Egyptian market, in a way that enhances investment and nationalizes the pharmaceutical industry.
- Increase the export of Egyptian medicine to regional and international markets, with a focus on Africa.
- Stimulating scientific research and developing innovative medicines in cooperation with universities and research centers.
- Activating quality and pharmacovigilance systems at all stages of manufacturing and distribution, to ensure a safe and effective medicine for the Egyptian patient.
Our recommendations in previous conferences were also keen to encourage innovation and enhance cooperation between various entities, whether governmental or private, to ensure the sustainability of the development of this important sector.
We meet today to follow up on these recommendations and research their application on the ground, based on new visions and innovative ideas, with the aim of improving health care in Egypt and providing medicine to all citizens of the highest quality and lowest cost.
